Ansal University’s Disha Sahu selected for ‘2013 BERKELEY PRIZE Travel Fellow’

New Delhi/Gurgaon: Ansal University, Gurgaon, an autonomous university dedicated to providing advanced trans disciplinary education added another feather in their cap with a 4th year Sushant School of Art & Architecture student, Disha Sahu being selected for the prestigious 2013 BERKELEY PRIZE Travel Fellowship. The BERKELEY PRIZE Competition was established in 1998, made possible by a generous gift of JUDITH LEE STRONACH to the Department of Architecture in the College of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley.

Through three distinct competitions - the Essay Competition; the Travel Fellowship Competition; and new this year, the Teaching Fellowship Competition - the international BERKELEY PRIZE competition encourages undergraduate architecture students and their teachers worldwide to go into their communities for the purpose of thinking and writing about issues central to the understanding of the social art of architecture.

Speaking on the occasion, Dean Dr. Rupinder Singh, Sushant School of Art & Architecture, said “At SSAA we are geared towards developing in each of our students a strong sense of design, technical sensibility and all-round awareness about their surroundings early in their career. We are proud that our student Disha Sahu has been shortlisted for the coveted Berkeley Prize Travel fellowship. This opportunity will give her exposure to a broad range of issues and will inspire her to experiment, create and refine her ideas.”

The 2013 BERKELEY PRIZE focuses on the topic: The Architect and the Accessible City. 152 architecture students from 26 countries responded to this year’s Question: Provide us with an overview of what is being done in your city to make it accessible to people who have physical disabilities.

Disha Sahu who participated in the 2013 Essay Competition communicated the idea of integrated inclusiveness, exploring the need for accessibility in mass transit infrastructure and a seamless vertical integration between various modes of urban transit to achieve first and last mile connectivity.

About the BERKELEY PRIZE:

Each year, the PRIZE Committee poses a Question on the competition website.  Students enrolled in any undergraduate architecture program throughout the world or those in collateral disciplines teamed with such students are invited to submit a 500-word essay proposal in English responding to the Question.

From this pool of essays, approximately 25 are selected as particularly promising by the PRIZE Committee, a group of, currently, 64 international architects, architectural educators, social scientists, writers, and general thinkers.  The 25 semifinalists are then asked to submit a 2,500-word Essay expanding on their proposals.

The Committee then selects five to eight of the best Essays and sends these finalists on to a jury of international architects and academics to select the winners.  The BERKELEY PRIZE Essay Competition is announced, papers submitted, and reader- and jury-reviewed all online.

The Essay semifinalists are also offered the opportunity to participate in the BERKELEY PRIZE Travel Fellowship Competition.  Simultaneously, faculty at accredited schools of architecture worldwide who teach undergraduate architecture students are invited to apply for a year-long Teaching Fellowship.

CMJ University to file a writ appeal after the Meghalaya High Court directed the controversial private varsity to stop admissions

Shillong: CMJ University today decided to file a writ appeal after the Meghalaya High Court directed the controversial private varsity to stop admissions while throwing out its appeal to allow it to continue admissions. "Our clients (CMJ University) will be filing a writ appeal before the division bench of the high court next week in the interest of the students of CMJ University," S.P. Sharma, the legal counsel of CMJ University, said. The High Court has also rejected an anticipatory bail application of CMJ University chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha. Upholding Meghalaya Governor R.S. Mooshahary's directive, Chief Justice T. Meena Kumari Thursday had asked the university not to admit students till the controversy surrounding the private varsity is resolved. CMJ University, named after its chancellor Chandra Mohan Jha, hit media headlines following Mooshahary exposing various irregularities in its functioning. Mooshahary also holds the post of 'visitor' of the university. The university has created a record by awarding doctorate degrees to 434 candidates in the 2012-13 academic year, and enrolled 490 students for the programme during 2012-13, even as only 10 of its faculty members have doctorate degrees. In her judgment, Chief Justice Kumari observed that the letter written to Jha has "no legal infirmity" and refused to interfere with the same. "The court finds that the letter has no legal infirmity and it need not be interfered with by this court. It is also made clear that till the controversy is resolved, the university shall not admit students in the university," Chief Justice Kumari stated in her judgment while disposing the writ petition. However, Jha's legal counsel contended that even though a number of representations were made to the government for approval of the chancellor, there was no approval accorded by the governor. "If the governor fails to accord approval, it is assumed that (he) has accorded his approval for functioning of the university and also the appointment of the chancellor of the CMJ University," Sharma stated. Sharma said the university proceeded under "deemed approval" and took admission and also offered degrees to the students who have completed the course for 2010-11. But Chief Justice Kumari said there were no materials, which were placed before the court by the petitioner according approval of appointment of the chancellor by the governor. "In absence of which, it may be assumed that there was no approval of the appointment of the chancellor by the governor," she observed. The chief justice further observed that the university had acted "on its own" without getting approval of the appointment of the chancellor in admitting students from 2010-11 onwards. "It is a common policy that the university cannot confer a degree on the students without a chancellor of the university. The subject matter of the writ petition involves such controversy and also for compliance of the certain requirements required under the statute for different courses, of which, is Ph.D. course under the prevailing circumstances," Chief Justice Kumari observed. CMJ University has also been barred from recruiting Ghanian students for its distance learning programmes since it is not accredited with Ghana's National Accreditation Board (NAB). Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma had hinted that the government may ask the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the university's functioning. "FIRs (first information reports) have been filed in different cities of the country. We are looking if the case should be handed over to a central agency," Sangma said. Meghalaya's Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is investigating the alleged lapses of CMJ University, has unearthed a number of irregularities in its functioning. The CID has arrested the varsity's registrar, Mrinal Kanti Deb, and his deputy Premlal Rai, on charges of fraud and cheating. A lower court in Meghalaya had issued non-bailable arrest warrants against Chandra Mohan Jha and his two associates, Manjeet Kaur and Juban Kharpuri, in connection with the alleged forgery and irregularities by the institution. source:agency

Mohammad Muzammil to take additional charge of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University

Agra: Rohilkhand University Vice Chancellor (VC) Mohammad Muzammil has been directed by the Uttar Pradesh governor to take additional charge of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University (formerly Agra University) here. D.N. Johar, erstwhile vice chancellor of the university, had submitted his resignation to Governor B.L. Joshi in the state capital Lucknow Saturday afternoon. As the news of Muzammil taking over the university reached here late Saturday, employees and students heaved a sigh of relief, a university official told IANS Sunday. "The VC's (Johar) days were anyway numbered after the resignation of Pawan Kumar Bansal as union railway minister. Johar was believed to be close to Bansal's nephew Vijay Singla and many decisions were taken to please him," the official said. Singla has been arrested for allegedly accepting Rs.90 lakh for fixing appointment in the powerful Railway Board. Manoj Srivastav, a teachers' union leader, said: "Johar did not listen to anyone. Students were harassed. He shunted out so many teachers." "People had big hopes from him (Johar) but now he leaves in utter disgrace. The university is in complete shambles," said a retired teacher Bhagwan Sharma. Johar, who has a legal background, was appointed vice chancellor of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar University on Jan 11, 2011. source:agency

Annapurna International School of Film and Media will conduct a four-week summer workshop on filmmaking for engineering students

Hyderabad: Annapurna International School of Film and Media will conduct a four-week summer workshop on filmmaking for engineering students, beginning May 27, the institution said Tuesday. The workshop involves working in teams to develop stories and to produce films. This process enables students to gain experience in the soft skills that are sought by employers. The workshop covers script writing, basic camera operations, editing and sound mixing, with a focus on teamwork and creativity, said a statement by the school run by the family of legendary Telugu actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao. "For many engineering students, the focus on technical studies and preparing for exams can squeeze out any time for creative endeavors. That's why we have scheduled this workshop in the summer holidays, so that students can build their communication skills without impacting their studies," said AIFSM president and popular Telugu actor Akkineni Nagarjuna. The need for such a workshop was felt as most students lack verbal and written communication skills, creativity, and teamwork and etiquette, he said. "I believe that schools like ours can help by assisting the students with the hands-on teamwork experience that is missed in our schools and universities. Also, soft skills are characteristics that make us more likable and help with making new friends," Nagarjuna added. source:agency

University of Chicago Booth School of Business, EMPEA collaborate to discuss the future of private equity in India

Mumbai, Maharashtra-- Chicago Conversations, presented by the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, will be hosted in Mumbai on June 10, 2013 with a focus to assess the current condition and take a view of private equity in India. Chicago Booth is collaborating with the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA) on a full-day discussion on "Private Equity" in Mumbai. Chicago Conversations brings together Chicago Booth alumni and prospective & current students with industry professionals to discuss the private equity scenario being witnessed in India. According to recent estimates, India-focused private equity funds have raised around $50 billion, primarily during India's economic and stock market boom between 2005 and 2007.

Today, despite the foreign exchange fluctuations, the political climate and government regulations, Mumbai remains an attractive hub of private equity opportunity. However, now more than a decade after the private equity industry took off in India, investors are beginning to take a step back and assess their investments in India.

Moderated by Scott F Meadow, Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship, University of Chicago Booth School of Business, experts like Ms Maninder Cheema, Deputy General Manager - Market Regulation Department, Division of Policy, SEBI, Mr Sanjay Nayyar, Head, KKR India, Mr Dhiraj Rajaram, Founder, CEO & Chairman, Mu Sigma, and Mr Rajesh Raju, Managing Director, Kalaari Capital (both alumni Chicago Booth), will deliberate on topics such as - has Indian private equity delivered the Indian growth story to investors in the last decade? Which industries have delivered high returns and which have failed to produce high returns? Looking ahead, what are the biggest challenges and opportunities for private equity investors in India? - while steering an honest and thought-provoking discussion on what the industry must do to prosper and reignite the fire in the private equity business.

Scott Meadow, Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship, Chicago Booth said, "It is exciting to be in India and steer a panel discussion on the topic of private equity at a time when the country is witnessing a slowdown in the overall inflow of foreign investment owning to policy issues and global sentiment of uncertainty on investing in India. The discussion is certain to be interesting with industry coming together to deliberate on issues relating private equity and the investment climate in India. Chicago Booth has had a long-standing relationship with India; Indian students make a vital contribution to the intellectual life of each class at Chicago Booth; almost one-third of the student body is from outside the U.S., with the largest portion of these students coming from India."

Every year Booth, in major cities around the world, organizes panel discussions and debates facing a variety of industries, including Energy, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Technology, and others.

Private Equity is part of the Chicago Conversations series started in 2008. Science Fair held at Canadian International School

Bangalore: Students of Canadian International School (CIS), Bangalore recently conducted a ‘Science Fair’ at its campus. The core idea behind this initiative was to develop inclination of students towards science and technology and widen their mindset in innovation. The students worked alone or in pairs, investigating questions and showcased creativity on varied subjects and used scientific methods to investigate things that interested them and reported their discoveries. Technology was innovatively used in all the projects by the students.

“Science Fairs are the culmination of research, hands on work, and experimentation. The enjoyable part is to witness the transfer of knowledge gained when a student explains and answers questions in a thought out way to every person that is interested in the "why" and "how" of the work the students have done” - Mr. Allan Villiers - K–8 Principal.

The students were very enthusiastic to perform their experiments.  Students learnt a lot through research about their projects and the hands on experiments .It was a fun filled day for ALL! - Ms. Poonam Singh – Grade 4A Homeroom teacher

The Science Fair experiments of Grade 4 were excellent. Children were able to relate to the topic they were handling and they were also enjoying themselves. - Nisha Prasad, Parent

The Science Fair was great fun! The parents, teachers, and students enjoyed my project on 'Static Electricity' as I made a Can roll towards a charged Balloon .As soon as we finished showing experiments we went to watch the ones done by other grades. I enjoyed a lot!-Vignesh

My experiment was about " Surface tension:" and "Capillary Action" .Teachers and students were eagerly listening to my explanations of the projects I had done. I worked hard on my projects and posters. It was fun doing and sharing the experiments with so many people. - Yui Okamoto

The Science Fair was really exciting as I got to talk to many people and showed them my wonderful experiment on Reflection of Light in a Smoke Box. People could easily see and understand the process of reflection of light as it fell on a plane mirror and was reflected. -Tasnuva

Stating that it was an eye-opening experience for all, Mr. Shane Kells, Head of School, Canadian International School expressed his views on how schools play a crucial role in moulding future scientists & how modern scientific technology has brought in tremendous development in various fields thereby improving the quality of life. When students work together, they learn to appreciate each other's' ideas and build-up collaborative and problem solving skills, he added.

Dalit activists joined Delhi University (DU) teachers in protesting against the four-year undergraduate course

New Delhi: Dalit activists Friday joined Delhi University (DU) teachers in protesting against the four-year undergraduate course, saying it will discourage students from economically and socially marginalised sections. "The four-year course will only mean that the students from the socially and economically backward classes will get marginalised," said Udit Raj, chairman, All India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations. "The foundation course will be difficult for students from rural backgrounds to complete it. They also do not have resources to meet the expenditure of an additional year of education," he said. "They are trying to make education elitist. Only the elite will be able to do this four-year course," he said. Teachers from the university added that the stress on English and Mathematics in the foundation course will discourage students. "A student from a rural background today can take admission in courses like Hindi and Sanskrit. That would not be the case when the new system is introduced," said Kaushal Panwar, who teaches Sanskrit at DU. "Those who have given up mathematics after 12th, how would they do the foundation course? The material recommended is mostly publications of foreign authors, which is expensive and in English. Not everyone can afford that," said Vijaya Venkataraman, associate professor of Spanish at DU. The activists and teachers have jointly formed the Joint Action Front for Democratic Education to protest the move by DU. The courses under the new four-year undergraduate programme comprise 11 foundation courses, compulsory for all students in the first four semesters. source:agency

Jamia Millia Islamia, has embarked upon a series of country-specific programmes

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia, one of the country's oldest universities, has embarked upon a series of country-specific programmes to prepare a cadre of experts to fulfil the research needs of the government and think tanks, something which foreign service officials are perhaps not adept at doing, the university says.

"The neighbours are extremely critical for us to understand. So what we produce in terms of MPhils and PhDs will actually go and produce the brains for the country. When the government is looking for brains, these MPhils will fulfil that need, " Jamia Vice Chancellor Najeeb Jung said.

Individuals drawn from both academia and the corridors of diplomacy run these programmes. T.C.A. Rangachari, the director of the Academy of International Studies (AIS), served as India's ambassador to France, Germany and Algeria and was the division head of China in the foreign ministry. Zikrur Rahman spent 25 years as a diplomat in the Arab world and was the Indian ambassador to Palestine. There are also academics who have spent their entire careers on research. Field work being critical to successful research, each centre is striving to solve this challenge in its own unique way. For instance, the biggest challenge is before the Pakistan Studies Programme (PSP), where travel by PhD students to Pakistan is practically ruled out. But as programme coordinator Ajay Darshan Behera told IANS: "We subvert this problem by engaging as many scholars and experts as possible from Pakistan by inviting them to Jamia." Through a series of seminars, the PSP has invited the Who's Who of Pakistan's intelligentsia, diplomacy and literary world to Jamia, including the former ambassador to the US, Husain Haqqani.

The PSP, set up in 2004 and recognised by the UGC in 2005, aims to promote greater understanding among scholars about Pakistan through extensive research work on the country's history, sociology, culture, literature, contemporary politics, trade and economics, geopolitics, and security and foreign policy. The Afghanistan Studies Programme encourages inter-disciplinary research focussing on the history, sociology, contemporary politics, economics, geopolitics, security, foreign policy and also languages. The programme is designed to stimulate debate in India on the politics, society, and economics of Afghanistan. It hopes to produce a pool of scholars with expertise on Afghanistan in India.

The UGC-sanctioned China Studies Programme will focus on studying the country's internal dynamics and external relations. "While India's approach to China is dominated by Sino-Indian relations, we need experts who understand the internal dynamics of China," programme coordinator Ravni Thakur said. Now being developed, the programme will examine all facets of contemporary China and will incorporate the Chinese language as a mandatory course. The programme titled Central Asia and its Neighbourhoods: Past Ties and Future Relations was started in 2007 following UGC approval. It's of high relevance because the countries that emerged out of the Soviet Union are still evolving a new identity for themselves by de-Russifying and because the region is geo-politically important to the world and is also energy rich.

Programme coordinator Rashmi Doraiswamy says it will not focus just on polity and economy but also on culture and society. Jamia's India-Arab Cultural Centre (IACC) has emerged as a centre of excellence for knowledge on Arab history, polity, economy, society and culture and on India-Arab relations. The centre's Gulf Studies Programme is a dedicated research unit for knowledge generation and dissemination and runs PhD programmes to prepare a cadre of experts on the Arab region. The Centre also offers a PG Diploma in Iranology.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court Wednesday issued notice to the central government and the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan (KVS) on a petition seeking direction to the schools body on its failure to provide totally free education to Class 1-8 students under the RTE Act.

A division bench of Chief Justice D. Murugesan and Justice Jayant Nath sought a response from the human resource development ministry and KVS by May 15.

The court in its order asked the central government to "explain by way of an affidavit" the steps taken to comply with the Right to Education Act. The court was hearing a PIL filed by NGO Social Jurists through advocate Ashok Agarwal. It alleged that Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV) all over the country, including Delhi, have been charging fee under various heads from the students studying in Classes 1 to 8. "A failure on the part of KVS, to provide totally free education to all students studying in Class 1 to Class 8 in all Kendriya Vidyalayas run by them as required in terms of Articles 21 and 21-A of the Constitution of India read with Section 3 of the RTE Act," the petition said. However, the KVS counsel submitted that after the enforcement of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, no tuition fee had been collected from the students. However, a minimal amount was charged for computer classes and other things. The plea further added: "Violation of fundamental and human rights to education of lakhs of children studying in different KVs run by the KVS as guaranteed to them under Articles 21 and 21A of the Constitution of India read with the provisions of RTE Act and also read with UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989)."
