IGNOU launches PG Diploma in Diabetes Mellitus

IGNOU's School of Health Sciences (SOHS) has signed an MoU with Hansa Med Cell of Hansa Vision Pvt. Ltd. to launch Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Diabetes Mellitus.

The programme, to be launched from January 2011 session, will be open to medical graduates to enhance their knowledge and skills in the area of medical diabetology.

According to the MoU, SOHS and Hansa Med Cell will design and develop the programme with the help from eminent diabetes specialists from across the country.

According to Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. P.R. Ramanujam, who was present at the MoU signing, "flexibility and outreach are the two important strengths of IGNOU and we hope to use these strengths for improving health care, especially for the poorest sections of our society.”

Srinivasan K. Swamy, Group Chairman, Hansa Vision, remarked that "Diabetes has become a pandemic today. The International Diabetes Foundation estimates that the number of diabetes cases in India has doubled from 19 million in 1995 to 40.9 million in 2007. It is estimated that by 2030, every fifth person with diabetes will be an Indian. Hence, we have taken up the herculean task of improving health care for diabetics, in collaboration with IGNOU”.

Prof. Bimla Kapoor, SOHS Director, announced that "Department of AYUSH, Government of India, is funding the development of a Certificate Programme in AYUSH Nursing for Auxillary Nurses and Midwives (ANMs). The programme is expected to be launched from January 2011 session.”

Punjab wants NRIs to help upgrade rural schools

Chandigarh: The Punjab government wants well-settled Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) from the state to contribute to upgrade government schools in the state's rural areas.

Punjab Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan today appealed to Punjabi NRIs living across the world "to contribute magnanimously for the upgradation of infrastructure in government schools situated in rural areas".

Punjab has thousands of NRIs, especially from the Doaba belt (between Sutlej and Beas rivers), comprising of Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur and Nawanshahr districts, settled in western countries.

Majority of the Punjabi NRIs are settled in the United States, Canada, Britain and other European countries.

Sekhwan said: "The hard working Punjabis have carved a niche for themselves in every nook and corner of the globe with their determination and the whole state feels proud of their unparalleled achievements. Despite whole-hearted efforts of the state government; the government schools were not in a position to compete with the infrastructure of private schools as we always have budgetary constraints."

The minister said that nearly 40,000 teachers had been recruited by the Punjab government in the last less than four years to ensure better education to students.

Noting that rural schools have been facing great difficulty in the form of unavailability of safe drinking water and clean toilets for their students, Sekhwan added that the data would be put on state education department's website so that NRIs could adopt such schools in their respective native places for providing these facilities.

Panjab University to host its pre-1970 alumni, including PM

Chandigarh: It's an institution that has had the likes of a president, prime ministers, union cabinet ministers, Nobel laureates, governors, chief ministers, actors and other distinguished people on its rolls.

As Panjab University in Chandigarh gets down to hosting its biggest alumni meet in February next year - what it calls the "first of its kind of event ever organised at the university level" in India - a lot of other notable people from around the globe too are likely to be part of it.

The unique alumni meet is for the real old-timers of the university - those who graduated or did their post-graduation from the institution prior to 1970.

"The event to be held Feb 19-20 will be the first of its kind ever organised at the university level in India. Many unknown alumni who are serving Indian society and people abroad in various capacities will have an opportunity to visit their alma mater," Panjab University vice chancellor R.C. Sobti told media.

"They can share their nostalgic memories and experiences in a personal interaction with the students and faculty of the university," he added.

Established in 1882 in Lahore, now in Pakistan, Panjab University was relocated to its present sprawling campus in Chandigarh's Sector 14 and 25 in 1956. It is one of the oldest universities in the country.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh leads the list of alumni from the university. He was a student of the university in the 1950s and later became part of the faculty in the economics department. At the young age of 32 years, he became a professor in the varsity.

Sobti said besides the prime minister, five of his cabinet colleagues, including Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, Tourism Minister Kumari Selja, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal and Sports minister M.S. Gill are the university's alumni.

Former prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral is also an alumnus of the university. Former president Shankar Dayal Sharma, who died in 1999, had also studied there.

Other notable alumni from the university include Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj, her husband and former governor Swaraj Kaushal, Nobel laureate Hargobind Khorana, late Indian American astronaut Kalpana Chawla, first Nobel laureate from Pakistan Mohammed Abdus Salam and India's first woman IPS officer Kiran Bedi.

Also in the list are Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, Jammu and Kashmir Governor N.N. Vohra, actor Anupam Kher, singer Jagjit Singh, comedian-actor Jaspal Bhatti, and Jnanpith award winner and Sanskrit scholar Satya Vrat Shastri.

"Panjab University can boast of numerous high-ranking alumni who have made a tangible mark in various domains of society, nation and the world," Ajaib Singh, director of the university's Centre for Life Long Learning, told media.

After the partition of the country in August 1947, Panjab University had to function at different places for almost one decade before settling on its present campus here.

While the administrative office was located at Solan which was earlier in Punjab and is now in Himachal Pradesh, the teaching departments functioned from Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Delhi and Amritsar.

The university's red sandstone campus, designed by Swiss architect Pierre Jeanneret under the guidance of renowned French architect and Chandigarh's creator Le Corbusier, came up within a few years. It is spread over an area of 550 acres.

Till the re-organisation of Punjab in November 1966, the university used to cater to areas in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

With an annual budget of Rs.2 billion (Rs.200 crore), Panjab University has a unique status of being neither a complete central university nor a state one. It is funded by the central and Punjab governments in the 60:40 ratio.

The university now has 75 teaching and research departments besides 15 centres and chairs. It has nearly 190 affiliated colleges spread over Punjab and Chandigarh.

Library policy formulated for the first time in Haryana

Chandigarh: For the first time, a library policy has been formulated in Haryana for the proper management and organisation of the reading material among students, a senior official said here on Wednesday.

The policy, formulated by the higher education department, is aimed to ensure optimum utilisation of the resources available in the libraries of the government colleges.

Director General Higher Education Dheera Khandelwal said the policy aimed at inculcating reading habits among the youth.

"Reading grooms the personality and gives best utilisation of spare time. The policy would ensure an easy access to maximum number of students to the books available in the college library, which is otherwise difficult for them. The policy would discourage retention of books by the borrower indefinitely," Khandelwal said.

Giving details of the policy, she said a maximum of 15 books could be issued to the principals and lecturers for a period of one month for each book. Post-graduate students could also be issued five books for a period of 14 days for each book. Under-graduate students would be issued three books for 14 days for each book, she added.

She said reference and rare books and periodicals would not be issued to the students. These would be available for consultation in the library itself.

Not returning the books within the stipulated time would entail a penalty of Re.1 per day per book, Khandelwal said.

Bhagwati to speak on Indian economy, reforms at Professor Hiren Mukerjee Lecture

New Delhi: India's economic growth and reforms would be the focus of eminent economist Jagdish Bhagwati, a Columbia University teacher, at the third Professor Hiren Mukerjee Lecture in Parliament House on Thursday that will also be addressed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Known for his works in international commerce and a great votary of free trade, Bhagwati is also a senior resident fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York.

"The theme of Bhagwati's lecture will be 'Indian Reforms: Yesterday and Today'," a statement from the Lok Sabha Secretariat said.

Besides Manmohan Singh, the function will also be addressed by Vice President Hamid Ansari and Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar.

Governors, chief ministers, presiding officers of state legislatures, MPs, judges and a large number of other dignitaries will attend the function in the Central Hall of Parliament House at 6.15 p.m. on Dec 2.

Parliament started the Professor Hiren Mukerjee Memorial annual lecture in 2008 with a view to create awareness among all stakeholders of democracy on various issues of critical significance to the polity as was envisaged by the late Communist leader and scholar, who was an MP from 1952 to 1977.

The inaugural lecture was delivered by Amartya Sen in 2008. Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus, who founded the revolutionary Grameen Bank in his country, delivered the second lecture last year.

UK's 2nd Hindu school to open next September

Press releases

UNITED KINGDOM'S second Hindu state school will open next September in Evington (Leicester, East Midlands), according to reports.

To be named Krishna-Avanti Primary School (Leicester), this 'Free School' (no fee charged to parents) will reportedly provide 420 places for children aged between four and 11 years and there is said to be a growing waiting list already. Besides outstanding academic opportunities, new school aims to provide a spiritual and moral framework while reflecting Hindu values. It plans to follow the national curriculum but also wants to reflect on Hindu culture and heritage. Leicester is reportedly home to the largest Hindu community in Europe outside London.

London based educational charity 'I-Foundation', which opened the voluntary aided Krishna-Avanti Primary School (KAPS) in Edgware (Middlesex) in 2008, is behind this new school and is also planning to open primary and secondary schools across North and East London with similar focus. Its aim is to help children realise their spiritual, moral and academic potential in an environment centred on loving service to Lord Krishna. I-Foundation is the promoter of Hindu state education in the United Kingdom with Nitesh Gor as its Board Chairman.

The already existing KAPS claims to be one of the most eco-friendly schools in the country, nurtures character and conduct consistent with Vaishnava virtues, provides opportunities to practice yoga and meditation and is vegetarian. N Parmar is the head teacher.

Applauding efforts to launch the second Hindu school in the UK, distinguished Hindu statesman Rajan Zed has urged the Hindu community worldwide to open more Hindu schools outside India.

In a statement in Nevada, United States of America, Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, said that with the economically strong Hindu community spread throughout the world, funding should not be a problem to open such schools. These would help Hindu children to strengthen their spiritual and moral roots and enlighten interested non-Hindus about the concepts and philosophy of the oldest and third largest religion of the world. With a stronger commitment of Hindu community, we would not even need state help, Zed argued.

Such schools would go a long way in nurturing Hindu virtues among our children and give them a spiritual identity. Moreover, these could help counter the misinformation about Hinduism prevalent in the West and promote Sanskrit, Rajan Zed added.

Himachal Pradesh to sensitise students about AIDS during school prayers

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government will disseminate information about HIV/AIDS during the morning prayer session of every senior secondary school to sensitise students about the scourge, a minister said today.

"To sensitise the young minds about AIDS, the government has decided to start educating the students in the prayer session of every senior secondary school from Wednesday," Health Minister Rajeev Bindal told the media.

He said the government has published information on AIDS that has been provided to the school heads. "Of course, the schoolchildren would act as health ambassadors in our future programmes," he added.

The hill state has 1,246 senior secondary schools with a strength of 273,488 students.

Bindal said Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal is launching a state-wide awareness campaign World AIDS Day on Dec 1 from Shimla, under which various programmes would be organised across the state for the next 25 days.

He said similar functions would be organised in all district headquarters on Wednesday, where local legislators would participate.

State AIDS Control Society director Sulakshna Puri said the state has 4,829 AIDS positive cases.

"The first case in the state was reported in 1992," she added.

Deepinder Hooda wants sports university in Haryana

Chandigarh: Buoyed by the success of Haryana's medal-winning sportspersons in the recent Asian Games and Commonwealth Games, parliamentarian Deepender Singh Hooda now wants the central government to sanction a sports university for the state.

Hooda, who represents Rohtak and is the son of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, said in a statement here that the university would be helpful in making the future of sportspersons brighter.

Hooda said he would place the demand in parliament and also before Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The Haryana chief minister has already announced the setting up of sports academies in various districts.

Hooda Jr said the state government had created a favourable atmosphere for sports. He added that no talented player in the state would have to make any compromise in pursuing sports due to his economic condition.

"Haryana players have again brought glory to the state and the country by exhibiting their sterling performance in the recently concluded Asian Games, after the Commonwealth Games," he said.

In the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, Haryana players claimed 37 out of the 101 medals won by India. Out of the 38 gold medals won, 21 came from Haryana players.

Several players from Haryana have made it big in events like boxing, wrestling, discus throw, athletics, shooting, badminton, kabaddi and others.

In the Asian Games at Guangzhou, Haryana players bagged five gold medals and 10 others. Their success has brought them the moolah as well.

Haryana players winning gold, silver and bronze medals in the Asian Games will be given cash rewards of Rs.25 lakh, Rs.15 lakh and Rs.10 lakh each respectively.

Commonwealth Games medal winners were given a cash reward of Rs.15 lakh, Rs.10 lakh and Rs.700,000 each for gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. They also got cars ranging from Rs.350,000 to Rs.800,000, mobile phones and up to 101 kg of desi ghee.

Haryana has over 350 sports stadiums in villages, blocks and towns.

Bhiwani district has emerged as a prominent nursery in boxing, producing boxers of international fame like Vijender Singh, who won a bronze medal in Beijing Olympics and gold medal in the Asian Games, Dinesh Kumar and Akhil Kumar.

The small town of Shahbad, 60 km from here, has produced nearly 40 international women hockey players in a short span of 10 years.

The Haryana government has plans to set up a wrestling academy at Rohtak and a kabaddi academy at Jind.
